He was 15 years old and an honor roll student with no criminal record. Efren alleges that on the night of the crime, he was brought home by the store’s manager after completing an overtime shift. He came home, heated up a slice of pizza his mom left out for him, went up to his parent’s room to catch up about his day, and then went to bed. Meanwhile, the store was robbed and the manager was murdered. Efren was charged with 3 life sentences and was the first teenager to be automatically sentenced to JLWOP in Michigan's history. There was no physical evidence linking Efren to the crime and no eyewitnesses. The case against Efren was based primarily on the statements of other youths who received reduced charges and sentences in exchange for their testimonies. Efren’s mother and his younger brothers all claim that they had witnessed his return home before the murder was committed. Those testimonies were discarded. Efrén was sentenced to two life without parole sentences and one parolable life sentence. Efren was tried and convicted by a jury comprised of 11 White jurors and one Black juror by the Berrien County Court in St. Joseph, MI, which in 1989 had a population that was 95% white. The judge, prosecutor, all the investigating police, and the victim in the case were all white. All but one of the youths in Berrien County who have received life without parole sentences have been children of color. Efren is still seeking exoneration. So it all depends on which one comes first. It’s a race between the two.” The center tombstone lists the names of the prisons Adolfo has stayed in: Tamms, Joliet, Menard, Pontiac, and Stateville. With the exception of Menard, Adolfo served part of his sentence at each prison in solitary confinement, or segregation. Ending the series with this scene, Adolfo sought to express the cycle of mass incarceration: how “if you lock up the parents, you lock up the kids too”. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole and maintains his innocence. Adolfo was 14 years old and the youngest person in Illinois' history to receive the sentence. There is no evidence to prove that Adolfo fired the gun. The night of the crime, Adolfo claims he was asked by two of his friends to be a lookout during the robbery of a rival drug gang, but that he was outside of the room, as a lookout, when the shooting took place. Adolfo had a second chance to plead his case following Miller vs. Alabama in 2012 when the Illinois Supreme Court chose to apply the ruling retroactively. Yet, on May 4th, 2015, Adolfo was resentenced back to life in prison by Judge, Andrea Petrone. The trial was 11 hours long. Judge Petrone justified sentencing Adolfo to die in prison, citing a need to deter others from committing crimes and a responsibility to protect public safety,. To Adolfo, his family, and his lawyers, Judge Petrone’s dismissal of his maturation, and of how the circumstances he faced during his childhood could have influenced his behavior, came as a shock. To Adolfo, it seemed as if he was not even worth knowing, or understanding, in the eyes of Judge Petrone. It was as if he was irredeemable. Demoralized, yet convinced he was destined to be free, Adolfo appealed the ruling. It was successfully overturned in the summer of 2017 by Illinois State's Attorney, Kim Foxx. The confrontation at Ocean Hill-Brownsville fractured the connection between teachers and families, between the labor movement and the civil rights movement, between Black and Jewish New Yorkers. Some of these wounds have never really healed. But as the strike dragged on for seven weeks, schools in Ocean Hill-Brownsville were open for business. In trying to answer that question, we discovered that the biggest, oldest questions we have as a country about race, class, and power have been tested in the schools of Central Brooklyn for as long as there have been Black children here. But as Black and Puerto Rican parents in Ocean Hill-Brownsville tried to exercise power over their schools, they collided headfirst with the teachers’ union — leading to the longest teachers’ strike in American history, 51 years ago this fall. What started as a local pilot project turned into one of the most divisive racial confrontations ever witnessed in New York City. Ocean Hill-Brownsville made the national news for months, shattered political coalitions and created new ones, and fundamentally shaped the city we live in today. But as the strike shut down schools citywide, Ocean Hill-Brownsville mobilized to keep their schools open — and prove to the world that Black people could educate their own children and run their own institutions successfully. Community School District 16 covers about half of Bed-Stuy. And almost every school in District 16 is hemorrhaging kids. There’s no single reason why this is happening, but the year 2002 is a clue: that’s when Michael Bloomberg became the Mayor, abolished local school boards, and took over the New York City school system. In this episode, we’ll meet parents trying to reassert collective power and local accountability in District 16 after years of neglect from the Department of Education; parents trying to save their school from being closed for persistently low enrollment; and parents trying to do what they believe is best for their children by leaving the district altogether. But even as the population of Bed-Stuy has been growing in numbers and wealth, the schools of District 16 have been starved for students and resources. That’s because a lot of people moving into the neighborhood either don’t have kids, or send their kids to school outside the district. Over time, the stars and hits have changed and the formats have evolved as well, from vinyl to CDs to MP3s. In recent years, however, the label has started releasing new albums on a medium few thought would ever see a comeback: the cassette. But there's one big user group that never entirely stopped using the old school technology. The United States prison system has the largest prison population in the world and many of its inmates listen to their music on tape. Some veterans of the community control movement started an independent school called Uhuru Sasa Shule, or "Freedom Now School," part of a pan-African cultural center called The East. Other Black educators tried to work within the new system of local school boards, despite serious flaws baked into the design. Both of these experiments in self-government struggled to thrive in a city that was literally crumbling all around them.
